To celebrate The New Yorker's centennial , we teamed up with the magazine to present a reinvented chess game that captures the pulse—and humor—of New York City .
This special edition transforms the city's icons into pieces: the Statue of Liberty stands guard as a Queen, pigeons swoop in as Horses, and the endless parade of yellow taxis advances as Pawns. Each figure is a subtle nod to the vibrant character of New York: ingenuity, movement, and that energy that never fades.
The set is illustrated by Christoph Niemann , a regular contributor to The New Yorker , and turns each game into a playable postcard, an object to leave on display, start conversations and always return to the board.
